CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Ariel

I’D NEVER BEEN TO a party before and the guys were shocked when I told them earlier. They insisted we have a small get together. Although it was only six of us, it was a still a party in my eyes. Sean kept saying I was naïve to the whole partying scene and apparently felt the need to harass me because of it. He can totally suck it!

Shay had asked who was going to be there when I called, which I thought was odd. Anyway, she promised to come. Leah was going to watch Sadie. Travis had just left to go get Kenzie, his girlfriend. Damon and Sean had just returned from the store. The guys were going to grill while we relaxed by the pool. I was in Damon’s room, changing into my bikini when someone knocked quietly on the door. “Hold on a second.”

I threw on my cover-up and walked over to unlock it. It was Shay, who looked extremely uncomfortable. “Can I come in?”

“Sure, yeah.” I held the door open for her to walk in and closed it behind her.

She paced the floor, and it reminded me of her brother doing the same thing not too long ago.

“Are you okay?”

“Me? Yeah, I’m fine.” She waved me off as if we were talking about the weather. She started chewing on her thumbnail.

“O… kay,” I said.

Shay hadn’t looked at me. Something was wrong.

“Do you want to go swimming?”

She violently shook her head no and took a deep breath.

“Okay, Ariel. Woman to woman, I need you to be extremely honest with me.”

What the hell?

“I’ll always be real with you. What’s going on?”

“It’s just… I haven’t been in a swimsuit in front of anyone since I gave birth to Sadie. And… well, some things have changed, you know?”

Shay looked great! She must think I’m a beached whale if she is concerned with her own body. “Are you serious? You’re a total babe, Shay.”

She put her hands out in front of her body as if to stop me from speaking. “Just a quick look, and please be honest. I can take it. ” She reached for the hem of her dress and pulled it over her head. The dress hung from her fingertips. She turned around in a circle really fast and threw the dress back on.

I burst into laughter — hysterical fits of laughter. I’d tried not to, I really had. The damn girl had it going on. Okay, maybe from the look on her face, laughter hadn’t been my best choice in the matter. I held my finger up and tried to stop so my words would be clear. It took me three tries before I could speak without laughing.

“Shay, you’ve got to be shitting me. You were just kidding, right?

“What?” She gasped, appearing even more uneasy.

“Which part of your anatomy were you actually concerned with?”

“Uh… all of it, dumbass!” Shay retorted, looking at me as if I’d lost my mind.

“Name calling isn’t very nice, and you have a killer body.
